Drunk by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, crowned best foreign film on Sunday at the Oscars ceremony, is a poignant ode to life through an improbable and dangerous alcoholic experience, but also a film that almost never saw the light of day because of the tragic death of the director’s daughter.

It is to her, who died a few days before the start of filming, that the director, very moved, dedicated his prize. “If you want to believe that she’s with us tonight, you can see her clapping and screaming with us,” said Thomas Vinterberg, upset. “We ended up making this film for her, like a monument for her.”
